Buy and sell signals for MCX crude oil, built around the evening session

MCX crude oil is two markets in one day. From 9:00 am until late afternoon it drifts in a narrow band on thin volume, because the people who set its price are still asleep in New York and Houston. From about 6 pm IST the US session wakes up, WTI starts moving, and the MCX contract follows it until the close near 11:30 pm.

WizeBuySell plots buy and sell signals on your own crude oil chart in AmiBroker or TradingView. Each signal carries an entry, three targets, a stop-loss and the timeframe it fired on, and it is confirmed only when the candle closes. This page covers how crude behaves through the day, where the signals fit, and where they do not.

Why MCX crude oil is quiet till evening and fast after it

MCX crude is a rupee copy of WTI. Its price is, roughly, the US benchmark in dollars multiplied by USDINR. A local refinery shutdown barely registers; an OPEC headline shows up within seconds. The contract is only as lively as the market it copies.

During Indian business hours that market is half asleep. Candles overlap, the range is small, and a break of the morning high often fails because nobody is behind it. Signals do fire in these hours, but the targets sit close to entry. Plenty of crude traders do not open the chart before 5 pm.

In the evening a 15-minute candle of ₹40 to ₹50 is ordinary, three or four times what the same chart printed at noon. Most of the day's range is made between 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm IST. Signals are most useful in this window, and mistakes cost the most in it.

How crude oil behaves in each part of the MCX session

Times are IST and shift one hour later when the US moves to winter time.

WindowWhat is happeningHow signals tend to behave
9:00 am to 2:30 pmAsian hours, thin volume, narrow bandFew signals, close targets, failed breakouts are common
2:30 pm to 6:00 pmEurope is active and the range starts to widenFirst usable 15-minute trends of the day
6:00 pm to 8:00 pmUS session opens and volume arrivesMost moves that travel to T2 or T3 begin here
8:00 pm to 9:00 pm, WednesdayWeekly US inventory reportSpike candles; price can jump past a stop-loss
9:30 pm to closeVolume fades and spreads widenLate signals have little time left to reach targets

These are tendencies we see on the chart, not rules. Some evenings crude does nothing at all.

What the 8 pm inventory number does to a crude oil chart

Every Wednesday the US Energy Information Administration publishes weekly crude stock figures. In IST that is 8:00 pm during US summer time and 9:00 pm in winter, and it moves a day later in a US holiday week. A surprise build or draw can move WTI one per cent inside a minute.

On the MCX chart you see one long candle, often with wicks on both sides as the first reaction is reversed. The software reads price. It does not know a number is due. A sell signal taken at 7:45 pm can be stopped out at 8:00 pm and look correct again by 8:20 pm.

A common habit is to stay flat from fifteen minutes before the release until the first full 15-minute candle after it has closed. The candle after the number is usually more honest than the candle of the number.

What a crude oil alert looks like

The alert text for a 15-minute crude oil signal follows this format. The prices are illustrative.

alert.txt
SELL CRUDEOIL @ 5684.00 | T1 5652.00 | T2 5615.00 | T3 5570.00 | SL 5726.00 | TF 15m | 19:30

Risk is ₹42 per barrel against ₹32 to T1 and ₹114 to T3. When T1 is hit the stop-loss moves to 5684.00; when T2 is hit it moves to 5652.00. Multiply by the contract size in the current MCX circular to get rupees per lot.

Choosing between 5, 15 and 30-minute crude charts

On a 5-minute chart crude gives many evening signals with stop-losses ₹15 to ₹25 away. Crude wicks ₹20 routinely, so expect more whipsaws. It suits someone who watches the screen from 6 pm to 10 pm without a break.

The 15-minute chart is the usual choice. Stop-losses of ₹35 to ₹50 sit outside ordinary wicks, and an active evening gives two to four signals. The 30-minute and hourly charts are for positions held across days, with the 9:00 am gap risk that brings.

MCX lists a main crude oil contract and a mini. The signal levels are the same prices on both, because both follow the same barrel. What differs is rupees per point and liquidity. If a ₹42 stop-loss on the main contract is more than you are willing to lose, the answer is the mini, not a tighter stop-loss.

Where crude oil signals fail

Inventory data, OPEC statements and war headlines move crude faster than a stop-loss order can fill. The stop-loss on the chart is a price level; your actual exit in a spike can be ₹10 to ₹30 worse. That slippage is yours, and no formula removes it.

The day session produces whipsaws: buy, sell, buy again inside a ₹30 band, each with a small loss. We do not publish an accuracy figure for crude oil or for anything else.

A crude oil evening routine with the software

  1. 01

Open the 15-minute chart at about 5:30 pm

Mark the high and low of the day session. That band is what the evening has to break.

  2. 02

    Check the calendar

Wednesday means inventory data. On a US holiday the MCX evening can be as dead as the morning.

  3. 03

Act only on the candle-close alert

Enter near the printed entry price. If crude has already run ₹20 beyond it, skip the trade.

  4. 04

    Trail as the levels say

    Stop-loss to entry at T1, to T1 at T2.

  5. 05

Stop taking new trades by 10:30 pm

Later signals rarely have time to work, and your broker will square off intraday positions before the close anyway.

Questions about Crude Oil MCX

Does the software work on both the crude oil main and mini contracts?

Yes. Both are among the 1,240 symbols covered. The levels come out almost identical in price because both contracts follow the same underlying; only the rupee value per point and the liquidity differ. In AmiBroker your data feed must carry MCX. On TradingView, confirm that your account shows MCX prices in real time; a delayed chart gives delayed signals.

Which timeframe is best for crude oil intraday signals?

Most of our crude users settle on 15 minutes for the evening session. It keeps the stop-loss outside the usual ₹20 wicks and still gives a few signals between 6 pm and 10 pm. The 5-minute chart gives more signals and more whipsaws. Use the free trial to watch both on the same evening.

Should I take a signal that fires just before the Wednesday inventory report?

That is your decision, but know the limit: the signal is computed from price and has no knowledge of the release. In the minute after the number, crude can jump through the stop-loss and fill you well beyond it. Skipping signals from about 7:45 pm on Wednesdays is a common precaution.

Why did crude oil open with a gap at 9 am when I had a stop-loss?

WTI trades almost round the clock while MCX is closed from late night until 9:00 am. Whatever happened overnight is priced in at the open in one jump. If that jump crosses your stop-loss, you are filled at the open price, not at your level. The software does not predict gaps, so size overnight crude positions with that in mind.

Can I get crude oil alerts on my phone in the evening?

On TradingView, alerts reach the mobile app within TradingView's own alert limits. On AmiBroker you get popup and sound alerts on the PC, and WhatsApp alerts on the Yearly and Lifetime plans. One caution: our support desk closes at 6:00 pm on weekdays, so a setup problem found at 8 pm will be fixed the next morning.
