Signals and indicators

Repainting

Repainting is when an indicator changes, moves or removes a signal it has already shown, so its past chart looks better than it traded live.

An indicator repaints when a signal it has already displayed later changes. The arrow may shift to a different candle, flip direction or disappear altogether. On a historical chart everything looks near perfect, because only the signals that worked are left standing. In live trading you would have acted on arrows that are no longer there.

There are a few usual causes. The code may calculate on the still-forming candle, whose high, low and close keep changing until it closes. It may look ahead at future bars, as some zigzag and swing-point tools do. Or it may pull higher-timeframe data in a way that uses values that are not yet final.

This matters to anyone choosing signal software, because screenshots and recorded videos cannot reveal it. A repainting tool and an honest one look alike in hindsight, and the repainting one often looks better. The only reliable check is to watch the chart live, note each signal as it appears, and compare later.

The common mistake is confusing two different things. A signal that flickers while the candle is still forming is not necessarily repainting, if the rule is to act only after the close. Repainting proper is a change after the candle has closed. The other mistake is trusting a back-test of a repainting indicator; its results cannot be achieved live.

Worked example

Checking for repainting on a 5-minute Nifty chart

Illustrative numbers: at 10:35 am the 10:30 candle closes and a buy signal appears with entry 25,000 and stop-loss 24,960. Take a screenshot with the time visible. At 11:30 am, reload the chart and look at the 10:30 candle again. If the tool does not repaint, the arrow is on the same candle with the same entry and stop-loss, even if the trade went on to lose 40 points. If the arrow has moved to a later candle or gone, the tool repaints.

In WizeBuySell

WizeBuySell signals are confirmed on candle close and do not repaint. Once a signal is printed it does not move or vanish afterwards, and that includes the ones that go on to hit the stop-loss. You do not have to take our word for it. Use the 2-day free trial, screenshot signals as they appear on your own chart, and compare them with the same chart later in the day.
